Food &Entertainment: Probably you’ve heard Sichuan cuisine for its spicy, hot, hot.. But Sichuan cuisine is perhaps the most popular of the eight major schools of China's culinary art., more details please turn to ETC Journal. Among the distinct and various flavors, the most outstanding ones are fish flavors, pepper powder boiled in oil, strange flavor and sticky-hot. Dishes typical of Sichuan are twice cooked pork, spicy diced chicken with peanuts, dry-fried shark fin, fish-flavored pork shred and Pockmarked Woman's bean curd (or Mapo Doufu in Chinese) which was invented by a Chengdu chef's pockmarked wife decades ago. The cubed bean curd is cooked over a low flame in a sauce which contains ground beef, chili, and pepper. When served, the bean curd is tender, spicy, and appetizing. Don’t miss it! Snack (called Xiaochi in Chinese) According to the latest statistic, there are more than 2000 kinds of snacks in Sichuan. Hotpot is the most popular. Hotpot(also called Huoguo) Maybe many travelers from the western countries are not used to this food taste, too much chili, but once in Sichuan, you’re really gonna try it! As the soup base is the first important thing about Huoguo, different restaurants might develop different kinds of soup base flavor to win in the competition. Fish, chicken, pork, mutton, beef, rabbit, and vegetables could all be used as the material. To name some more: Dandanmian(Dandan noodles), Lai Tangyuan (sweet dumpling), Long Chaoshou (dumpling soup), Fuqi Feipian (cold dish of beef slices). Each dish gives off distinct flavor and color. Tea house One of the best thing to do in Chengdu is to sit in the open air teahouse, enjoy the sunshine, tasting a cup of tea, without the disturbing from the outside and inside. The teahouses are all over the city and the suburbs. They have not only a very long history, but also some unique styles. Whichever tea house you go into, you can appreciate the strong flavor of Chengdu: the bamboo chairs, the square tables, the particular tea sets, the copper teapots and the special skill of filling water of the waiters. And all of these will give you some very deep impression. Coffee houses and bars are found everywhere in the downtown. The most popular coffee houses are San Diego and Old Tree, also there are many around the Transportation Youth Hotel. Now the most well-known bar should be Music House, thanks to the Super Girl Show held in 2004-2006. SPA, Bowling, Golf etc facilities are no inferior than any elsewhere. The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is unique and a scientific marvel. It provides the vital passage that joins mountain and plain. The main system consists of three parts: a fish-mouth-like water-dividing dyke, two spillways for discharging flood waters and silt, and a channel cut through Yulei Mountain as a water inlet. These three parts interact and depend on one another, constituting a carefully designed and reasonably arranged water diversion hub that contributes to irrigation, flood control, and shipping. |
